With the new year just around the corner, learning how to set goals is an important part of starting the new year off on the right foot! Goals such as getting fit, having more vegetables in your meals, or anything unrelated to health, is something awesome to have for the new year. We are all trying to chase the phrase, “new year, new me,” and to do so, it will take an enormous amount of effort and dedication.

First, there needs to be an understanding between short-term goals and long-term goals. Short-term goals are the stepping stones to your long-term goals. These short-term goals are something that can be quickly achieved such as daily checkpoints, weekly objectives, and monthly goals. The best way to achieve short-term goals is by writing them down in a journal. Waking up and knowing what needs to be accomplished the next day is beneficial to achieve these short-term goals. As these short-term goals add up, long-term goals seem more achievable and less gigantic. Long-term goals provide a framework for what the end goal is. For example, if someone wants to achieve a six-pack, they need to set short-term goals on improving in their daily workouts so that 4-5 months down the road they can achieve their goal of having a six-pack.

You should also make sure that your long-term goal is realistic and manageable. Goals that may seem overly ambitious can cause some individuals to feel overwhelmed and lost on where to start. Ask yourself these questions before you set a goal:

How will I reach my goal?
What resources do I need to reach my goal? What time frame is this goal achievable in?
How much time am I willing to put into this goal? Will I stay consistent with reaching this goal?

These are just some of the questions that you can ask yourself to truly understand the breakdown of how to achieve a goal. Goals are very important for character development. Setting goals helps trigger new behaviors and helps guide your focus in life. Goals not only motivate us to strive for greater but can also improve our mental health and inspire the level of personal and professional success that we want to achieve.
